In an effort to stay on track toward my goals, recently I’ve been focusing a lot on being effective.  One of the activities that is hard but necessary is to spend 15-30 minutes at the “start” of the day (for me this is often after coaching 3-4 hours first) prioritizing 3 actions that advance me toward my goals.  But how do you choose when you have 100 projects you are working on?

To do this, I’ll share my personal mission statement:

I help extraordinary people lead awesome, inspired lives.

Here are my personal values:

  1. Have Fun, be Active, and Play a lot
  2. Love greatly and pursue great adventure
  3. Do something that matters

And my short and mid-term goals:

  1. Travel to Belgium in the Fall for my high school reunion and spend time adventuring in Europe
  2. Grow The Foundry Tribe to 350 (~ +75)
  3. Work less than 50 hours / week and take weekends off (except to workout)

Being effective means working on things that relate to your goals.  Using this framework, I chose writing this newsletter as my #1 project for today.  I’m going to help more people lead an awesome life and I’d like your help to accomplish it.  Going forward I’ll be in communication once a month to keep you updated.

Another thought occurred to me, I bet other people also struggle with avoiding!  Is there an important project in your life that you’d like to accomplish, but remains on the back burner?  Is your life as awesome as you want?  More specifically, does your health and fitness support the awesomeness you aspire to?  We’d like to help, and we’ve been working on something really cool to support you.

WHAT WE ARE UP TO

I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished in the past four years and the incredible tribe we have created.  Our team and our community inspire me to get up at 4-5am most days, work till 7-8, and grow and get better as a leader and a person.  As I look around at our industry, most of our competitors are in a race to the bottom, trying to figure out how to deliver something that resembles our service at the lowest cost by reducing quality and/or standards.  Most clients do not achieve their goals and it burns out coaches.

We are going the other direction.  We are here to raise the bar far higher than it has ever been set and we won’t be satisfied by anything less than sustainable awesome lives for our coaches and members.

THE FOUNDRY PRESCRIPTION FOR AN AWESOME LIFE

We want you to live an awesome life

We’ve come up with a model that inspires us and we’re excited to share:

  1. Follow The Foundry Code for Fitness at least 2-3x/week.
  2. Eat clean 80-90% of the time.
  3. Be active outside the gym at least once a week, try a new sport at least once a year.
  4. Explore a new neighborhood or get out of the city at least once a month.
  5. Embark on an adventure at least once a year.
  6. Spend quality time with friends or family outside your household at least once a week.

How do we do this?  The success of our business has always been built upon the quality of our relationships.  We’re putting an even higher priority on this through our Coach For Life program

COACH FOR LIFE

Fitness is a tough industry. 95% of people working in this business have been doing so for less than three years.  Why? It’s tough to make a decent living, clients come and go, and the schedule is both super early and super late.  It leads to burnout and turnover.  We started thinking about how we could improve this and modified the mission statement to include the following language:

THE FOUNDRY MISSION

“To create sustainably awesome lives for our members, provide a professional opportunity for our coaches, and support health within the communities we serve.”

We’ve been hard at work on this ever since.  Coach For Life is the concept that you have a dedicated coach to work with you through your entire journey at The Foundry.  Someone who knows about you and your goals, what your strengths and weaknesses are, any challenges or limitations you face, and helps keep you accountable to achieving what’s most important to you.  Your coach for life is there to consult with when you want to learn something new, when you have questions about your nutrition, how to apply your training to an outside sport/activity, or how to recover from an injury.  It goes far beyond just teaching classes, but the outcomes speak for themselves.
